Access Control in Crowded Spaces Essential for the Safety of Customers and Employees During the Pandemic

Access control in high-traffic areas becomes essential especially during crisis situations such as the one caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Such situations require exceptional measures regarding hygiene and social distancing to prevent the infection of a large number of people.

At the same time, during such periods, traffic in certain commercial spaces, especially those where we find consumer goods (supermarkets, grocery stores), is much more intense than usual.

How do we adhere to social distancing rules in such heavily trafficked areas? It all starts with how access is managed in a supermarket, for example. How many people enter the space at the same time? How do we count them? How do we provide or restrict their access inside and inform customers about this flow, so that all visitors are safe and unpleasant situations are avoided?

One Solution is Strict Access Control Based on a Visitor Counter.

How does it all work?

  • At the store opening, the counter is initialized with the maximum number of people who can be inside simultaneously.
  • With each customer’s entry, the number displayed on the screen decreases, indicating how many more people can enter the store.
  • Each customer’s exit increments the number displayed on the screen, indicating the real-time updated number of admissible people in the store.
  • If the maximum number of people present simultaneously in the store is reached, the number 00 is displayed, the turnstile will be locked, and no more people will be allowed access until the first person exits.

Therefore, if the maximum allowable limit is 100 people, the display will show the number 99. The first person entering the store decreases the number on the display to 98, for the second person, the display will show 97, and when the first person leaves the store, the display will show 98.

What Advantages Does this Access Control Solution Offer?

  • It helps security staff limit the number of people present in stores;
  • It is a system easy to understand by customers who will know when they can enter the store – the display constantly shows, in real-time, the number of people who can still enter;
  • The turnstile and railings are made of stainless steel, so they can be cleaned with disinfectants, minimizing the risk of touching contaminated surfaces;
  • The counter is adjustable, and the maximum number of people who have access can be controlled by store personnel.

Access control solutions prove to be particularly useful in various situations, especially when careful control of flows is required for everyone’s safety.
