Smoke Hatches from KADRA for Big Bazar CăLăRașI

The Big Bazar in Călărași, a well-known traditional shopping center for the city’s residents, underwent a major transformation at the beginning of 2021. Essentially, the old construction was demolished to be replaced with a new one, meeting current safety and comfort standards. Therefore, better conditions for merchants and shoppers right in the center of Călărași.

The new bazar features 87 commercial spaces, spread over an area of 1,550 sqm, with the construction developed on the ground floor, measuring 40.80×40.86 m. Safety is the watchword for such a commercial construction, frequented by a large number of people daily, and housing significant quantities of diverse goods constantly.

Pneumatic Smoke Hatches for the Safety of Merchants and Shoppers

For the safety of Big Bazar Călărași, KADRA teams proposed and installed 13 pneumatic smoke hatches, compliant with EN 12101-2 standards and CE marked. These are equipped with an individual thermal opening device with a fusible link calibrated at 68 °C and a CO2 tank resistant to high temperatures. The dome of such a hatch is made of Opal-White cellular polycarbonate with a thickness of 16 mm, extremely durable over time, including against weather conditions (wind, hail, sun). The hatch base is made of polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass, with thermal insulation, and a universal mounting foot for ridge installation.

Smoke Hatches, Essential Role in Fire Situations

Fires can occur at any time, especially in spaces with a high density of people and goods, intense traffic, and diverse operations. Therefore, it is essential that any construction complies with current regulations regarding protection in such situations. And smoke hatches are key elements in emergency cases. They help with smoke evacuation and heat release from an enclosure, they can be integrated into a partition wall (including ceiling, roof) that separates the interior of a building from the exterior. The regulation requires an opening angle of the device greater than or equal to 30 degrees.

Smoke hatches have a dual role: ensuring personnel safety and protecting the building in case of fire.

Through the automatic opening of smoke hatches, hot gases and smoke are quickly evacuated, keeping escape routes visible and thus protecting the people inside. It also ensures the entry of oxygen and the elimination of toxic gases. In most fire cases, the majority of victims are caused by the lack of oxygen rather than contact with fire or hot gases.

Building protection is achieved by evacuating heat, preventing the flash-over phase (the moment when all combustible materials in the enclosure suddenly ignite, reaching very high temperatures of 1000-2000°C). Maintaining visibility in the building will allow firefighter teams to easily intervene to extinguish the fire.
