Smoke Vent Construction Elements

The double frame of a smoke vent is constructed from duralumin profiles with a wall thickness of 1.5mm and an integrated drip edge. The profiles of the smoke vent are made from a special alloy with high mechanical resistance to shock and deformation.

Double Frame – Smoke Vents

This system opens through a hinge mechanism made from the same aluminum alloy and has the axis of the upper frame’s ‘throw’ outward to avoid hitting the drip edge of the upper frame or the edge of the polycarbonate dome in the lower frame or the seating support in case of a full opening. Additionally, the hinges of the smoke vent are shock-resistant and have an easy and much safer assembly system through a channel that slides longitudinally.

Pneumatic Piston – Smoke Vents

It is a linear pneumatic motor, made from a casing and pistons of duralumin with steel ends. It is a sequential telescopic system with three segments that open successively. The last segment of the motor to be actuated (the one with the smallest diameter) has a reduced opening speed because the last phase of the opening exceeds 90 degrees, where the weight of the upper frame acts inversely and the opening speed must be slowed to prevent system damage (shock-resistant system).

Thermofusible Ampoule – Smoke Vents

The opening system of a smoke vent is equipped with an ampoule made of glass containing a colored liquid (depending on the temperature at which it is calibrated) sensitive to temperature variations. This liquid, when in contact with a heat source, expands easily, creating pressure in the closed enclosure of the ampoule and causing it to break. This determines the release of a pre-tensioned spring that pierces the compressed gas cylinder, which expands in the piston chamber, causing the vent to open. The ampoule of a smoke vent can be calibrated at 68°, 90°, 120° C and is used according to the requirements in the construction specifications.

Compressed Gas Cylinder – Smoke Vents

The compressed gas cylinder of a smoke vent is a container made from special steel containing compressed CO2. At one end, it is equipped with a thread through which it is mounted on the control block. It is equipped with a pressurized casing that will be perforated by a needle in the event the thermofusible ampoule breaks and activates the automatic opening mechanism of the vent (pneumatic cylinder). The ampoule is a single-use element, with no possibility of recharging.

Pyrotechnic Activator – Smoke Vents

The pyrotechnic activator of a smoke vent is mounted on the vent opening device that operates independently of the thermofusible ampoule. It can be activated remotely via an emergency button or by connecting to a network of smoke and heat sensors and/or a control panel with a safety button.

It consists of a micropiston with a 15 mm stroke, in whose chamber is a pyrotechnic cap with internal ignition, which explodes upon receiving an electrical impulse (12V or 24V, 0.2A), actuating the micropiston that mechanically breaks the thermofusible ampoule. It is equipped with an electrical connection and grounding with a fire-protected cable with a silicone sheath.

Thermoformed Polycarbonate Dome – Smoke Vents

The dome of a smoke vent is made from thermoformed cellular polycarbonate, self-supporting, resistant to extreme weather conditions, with a thermal transfer coefficient of 1.8 W/m²K. Depending on the requested elements, the dome can also be made from other roofing materials, such as PMMA, polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass, etc. This dome, depending on the dimensions of the vent (when they are maximum), will be made from two pieces that will join at the seam.

External Opening Mechanism of the Smoke Vent for Maintenance

This is achieved through a metal rod that pierces the lower frame to the outside and is integrated with the piston in the control block that locks the upper frame. Thus, by activating it, the upper frame can be unlocked and opened from the outside without affecting the automatic opening system. The piston, at the opposite end of the rod, is equipped with a “hook” to lock the upper frame. In the event of a fire, it is pneumatically operated to release the upper frame. The ring fixed on the upper frame is also equipped with a threaded adjustment to be adjusted in case the upper frame does not press on the lower one or if misalignments occur over time.

The smoke hatch is also equipped with additional elements necessary to ensure its functionality, such as sealing gaskets, flexible connection tube, fittings, screws, etc.

Sheet Metal Base – Smoke Hatches

The base of a smoke hatch can be made of pre-painted sheet metal in RAL 9002 or galvanized, with a thickness of 1.2 mm, and a height between 200 and 500 mm, with extruded polystyrene insulation and an external surface prepared for the installation of the bituminous membrane. The profiled base made of polyester resin – this type of base is used when the smoke hatch is mounted in the roof field made of sandwich panels, regardless of their type.
