EN 16005: The European safety standard for automatic doors and how KADRA ensures compliance
EN 16005 establishes the safety requirements for automatic pedestrian doors. Find out what the standard covers and how KADRA provides certified solutions – from sliding and swing doors to folding or breakout models – for safe and compliant use.

What is EN 16005 and why does it matter
EN 16005 is the European standard that regulates the safety in use of automatic pedestrian doors – sliding, swing, folding, and revolving.
Originally published in 2012 and updated in 2015, the standard applies in all CEN member countries, including Romania, and is mandatory for manufacturers, installers, and operators who use automatic doors in public or private buildings.
Its purpose is clear: to protect users from the risk of injury during the automatic operation of doors and to ensure safe, quiet, and energy-efficient operation.
Scope of application
EN 16005 applies to:
- automatic sliding, swing, folding, and revolving doors intended for pedestrian traffic;
- access doors in hospitals, shopping centers, offices, public and industrial buildings, etc.;
- evacuation routes, where doors must be able to be opened manually in case of emergency.
It does not apply to high-speed industrial doors or doors intended exclusively for vehicular traffic.
Main requirements of EN 16005
- Safety during the closing and opening movement
The door must detect the presence of a person across the entire movement area and prevent accidental contact.
The standard requires:
- presence sensors on both sides of the door;
- limiting the closing force and speed;
- sensitive edges that stop automatically on contact;
- redundant safety systems that ensure stopping in the event of a fault.
KADRA supplies automatic doors equipped with sensors and controllers compliant with EN 16005, which detect any obstacle in the movement area, ensuring safe operation for users of all ages.
- Accessibility and effortless use
The standard requires that automatic doors can be operated without physical contact, have full opening, and have a reaction time adapted to pedestrian traffic.
In medical facilities or buildings with heavy traffic, this prevents contamination and facilitates access for people with disabilities.
KADRA offers automation systems with motion sensors, touchless buttons, and access control systems that ensure smooth and hygienic passage for staff or visitors.
- Emergency protection
Automatic doors located on evacuation routes must be able to be:
- opened manually with a simple push;
- equipped with backup batteries for operation during power outages;
- integrated into the building’s fire control system.
This category includes sliding breakout models, which, in an emergency, can be pushed outward, automatically turning the sliding opening into a swing opening for quick evacuation.
KADRA integrates these safety functions into automatic doors, ensuring automatic opening upon a fire alarm signal and compliance with P118 evacuation requirements.
- CE marking and compliance documentation
Every installed automatic door must be:
- accompanied by a CE Declaration of Conformity;
- labeled with a visible CE plate;
- supplied with user and maintenance manuals in the national language.
KADRA supplies each automated system with complete documentation – CE Declaration, technical data sheets, and safety instructions – required for compliance with audits or technical acceptance.
- Periodic maintenance
The EN 16005 standard requires periodic inspection of automatic doors, at least once a year, by an accredited service company.
Purpose: to ensure that the sensors, mechanisms, and safety systems function correctly.
KADRA Service provides preventive maintenance services for all types of automatic doors, with periodic inspections and compliance reports, extending equipment lifespan and maintaining user safety.
How KADRA solutions contribute to EN 16005 compliance
